Heard this once before when I was 19. It was followed by the sound of a heartbeat echoing through the dried creek bed we were sitting in. It still haunts me to this day because I know neither of the people I was with realize what it was even though we all heard it. I made us pack up and leave immediately and told them to walk at half-pace making aggressive noises as I walked backwards down the trail with my knife out. This sound is especially terrifying when it’s just over the hill from you. They still talk about it as a ghost, but I know what it was.

Imagine you're in a confined deep red rock canyon in southern Utah, camping out alone off-season (the august monsoon flash flood season) and it's around midnight and you hear this sound echoing off of the canyon walls. I was staying at my sister's, whose house was right on the edge of the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. We were sitting on her bed, talking, next to an open window. It was about 10 o'clock at night. Suddenly, right outside of the window, a mountain lion screamed just like this. The sound was so loud and so terrifying that for a second we just stared at each other, frozen in horror. Then she jumped up and slammed the window shut while I ran to make sure the dogs were in the house. That was one of the most primal and terrifying moments of my life.
